In a groundbreaking move set to revolutionize travel to the East African gem, Kenya has reached a new era by becoming a visa-free destination. The nation has embraced the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system. This system streamlines entry procedures for visitors.
What does it mean for you?
This monumental shift not only simplifies travel but also shows Kenya’s commitment to enhancing its tourism industry and fostering global connections. Let’s delve into the details of this exciting development and what it means for travelers worldwide.
Under the new regulations, travelers planning a visit to Kenya no longer need to navigate the complexities of visa applications. Instead, they can obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) online before their journey. This process eliminates the need for enormous amounts of paperwork and lengthy processing times.
Who needs an eTA?
All foreign visitors need to get an eTA before coming to Kenya. Except when you’re from one of these East African countries – Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, or Uganda – you don’t need an eTA.
Each traveler is required to apply for an eTA before starting their travel. It is mandatory to use the Government’s official website to submit your application. Applications submitted via third party websites will be automatically denied. For children under the age of 18, the legal guardian, parent or accompanying adult is responsible for filling the application.
How to obtain an eTA
The Government of Kenya has made a website available as a secure platform for the purpose of allowing visitors to submit information and apply for an eTA. eTA applications must be completed only through the official website or the “Kenya Travel Authorization” official mobile application and must be done for each individual who intends to travel to Kenya.
Steps:
- Visit www.etakenya.go.ke
- Click “Apply Now” and follow the instructions
- An email confirming your application will be sent to you
- Upon decision by Immigration officer, an email confirming Approval / Refusal will be sent to you
- If your application has been approved, please either print the PDF document that has been attached to the email, OR download the document to your mobile device OR save it in the “Kenya Travel Authorization” mobile app. This is your electronic travel authorization that needs to be shown at all departure and arrival points.

Your eTA will be valid for 90 days, starting from the day of issuance. It is possible extend your eTa for another 90 days upon request.
